While I don't mind talking about politics on this weblog, I very rarely ask the few people who read my blog to engage in any political activity (exception here). This time is different. Tonight, Senator John Kerry announced that he will fillibuster the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court. When you have a few seconds, head over to John Kerry's webpage and sign his open letter to the Senate. Then if you have a bit more time to spare, go to the Senate webpage, look up the name of your Senator and give them a call (best), or e-mail (good).
If you don't know why I and a broad based coaliton of groups oppose Judge Alito, read this.

Posted by: Noah Brimhall at January 27, 2006 03:11 PMI signed the statement of disapproval for Alito's placement, but filibusters are for those inside the "beltway", not in Oregon. Politically, this is not a ditch for me to die in. Stopping legislation is not a way to get the votes Dem's deperately need. Kerry is immersed in partican politics; that's his game - not mine.
Well, while I respectfully disagree with the gentleman from Oregon, it is OK if he doesn't support the fillibuster. His senator (and mine), the honarable Ron Wyden already does support it. I still urge others to consider the import of a nomination of a Supreme Court Justice (life-time apointment and all) and the historic and traditional use of the fillibuster. The fillibuster isn't a bad thing, it is what made the Senate "The World's Most Delibratiive Legislative Body". Not every nominee deserves an "upperdown" vote, contrary to what Bush says.
