Hallelujah!!!!

Not that I'm going to buy one until it is wireless, but I really feel like it is about time that Apple decided to bless us with a multi-button mouse. They did it the right way as well, not just adding one button. The new mouse has 5 programmable buttons (including the scroll ball). The buttons don't actually have mechanical click, but instead use touch pads (kind like an iPod click wheel) and have a very tiny speaker for auditory feedback.

So what is the biggest problems with this mouse? First, it has a wire. I have adopted Bluetooth as my interface of choice for mice and keyboards, so as long as this mouse has a tail, I won't be buying. Second, it doesn't come standard on any current Macs. This may change soon, but if it doesn't the same people who complained about the one button Mac mouse (myself included) will complain that the two button mouse is still not standard equipment.

Finally! The longer Apple delayed producing a two-button mouse with scroll-wheel, the worse they were going to look when it finally happened. Amazingly, they've managed to sidestep most of the bad press and don't have to eat any crow by innovating a two-button mouse into the 'no-button' mouse. I figured there was no way to add the functionality of right-click and scrolling without compromising the beauty of the Apple Pro Mouse. I was wrong.

For a mouse, $49 is a little expensive. For an Apple mouse, it's not.

It's unfortunate that there isn't a wireless model, but now I don't regret not getting Bluetooth built into our G5 iMac. It should go great with that and any other Mac desktop. I'm a little worried, though, because our iMac is still using Panther, and apparently you can only customize the buttons in 10.4.2. Um, why? And it remains to be seen how well it works. Time to visit an Apple retail store and play around...

If you want a good wireless notebook mouse, check out the RadTech BT500. It's working great with my new iBook. Just invest in some AAA batteries.
