Racing the Street Car

Late last week Jack Bog posted about the Portland Streetcar extension to RiverPlace. Jack isn't a big fan of the Portland Streetcar and one of his often repeated criticisims is "You can get there faster on foot." I never have really believed this, but I never tested it either. Now Chris Snethen of Undecided Resident has tested it out. He raced a streetcar from NW 18th and Lovejoy to PSU's Urban Center. Read his account for more information. In the end Chris lost to the street car by at least 10 minutes. It didn't convince Jack, but I'm pretty convinced.

They run every 15 minutes. If he had just missed one, he probably would have "won" against the next one. Also, keep in mind that few riders ride the whole 3-mile length. For shorter hops, you can definitely get there faster by walking. I'll try to prove it on my own blog sometime over spring break.

An interesting point and one I hadn't considered. Rather than stand there and wait the ten minutes or so for the next train, why not just walk instead? I see where you're going now! I *did* beat the train! lol I still want to see if I can beat a given train from Point A to Point B. With a little preparation and a good game plan, it can be done.

It may not move as quickly (it doesn't, in my experience), but its usually drier.
