This morning I heard a NPR piece on "Democratic" Senator Zell Miller (GA) speaking at the GOP convention tonight. At the end of the story the reporter, Juan Williams, stated "Love him or not, there no denying the political power that presidential candidates, Democrats and Republicans, see in Senator Miller's ability to speak to moderate voters." Well, I defiantly don't like crazy Zell, and I will deny his power to speak to moderate voters.
So here are my top reason's that Zell won't sway shit:
1. He's not a Democrat: Now I know that when he appears on Face the Nation or Hannity and Colmes it says "Zell Miller (D, GA)" under his picture, and I know that he was elected as a Democrat, but when you caucus with the Republicans, and vote for every major piece of legislation Bush wants, then you are not a Democrat.
2. He doesn't represent moderate Democrats: Miller will say that he represents an abandoned wing of the Democratic Party that is more conservative than the rest of the party. Well guess what, the part of the party Miller "represents" doesn't really exist. The "Southern Democrat" that Miller wants to be is now a republican that was already going to vote for Bush. The real southern Democrat is more liberal than Miller and is probably going to vote for Kerry.
3. Zell sponsors some weird stuff: In my previous articles about Zell, I mentioned legislation aimed at not allowing the Supreme Court to rule on any case involving religion, another aimed at allowing Congress overrule any decision of the Supreme Court and finally repealing the 17th amendment, thereby removing the right of the citizens to directly elect their Senators. These aren't laws that anyone thinks will pass, and Zell kills his credibility by sponsoring them.
4. Zell is a lame duck: Zell is not running for reelection and has nothing left to loose. He decided to show his true colors a while ago because he has nothing left to loose. He is not accountable to his voters and no one should take him seriously.
Juan Williams did a good job in his NPR story of detailing some of the reasons the Democrats don't like Zell, but his conclusion is flawed.

There are a lot of moderates that are not democrats out there. I know of many whose ears perked up and listened to that particular speech.
