Marraige in Multnomah

The Portland Communique picks up on the big news of the afternoon, "Breaking News: Multnomah County To Begin Issuing Same-Sex Marriage Licenses".

Great news of course. I am happy to see this in my hometown.

Happy? I'm thoroughly upset. How can you be happy for people breaking the law?

The law is definately ambiguous on this issue. The law states "106.010 Marriage as civil contract; age of parties. Marriage is a civil contract entered into in person by males at least 17 years of age and females at least 17 years of age ...." This is definately ambiguous enough for the county issue licenses to same sex couples.

Even if this weren't ambiguous, I would still support this action. I support the act of civil disobdience that the mayor of San Francisco is participating in and I would support the same here.

I will be getting married later this year to my fiance Megan with a license from Multnomah County. It makes me proud that I will be getting married with a license from a county that allows straight and gays couples to get married.

Why does the idea of two happy commited people getting married scare you so much?

Its kind of sad how devicive this has and will become because its really wonderful. I've never done anything as cool as getting married, and I can't imagine keeping that from committed partners.
